How to Make Spumante

In this simple and intuitive article, Wine Folly explains the various methods used to produce sparkling wine. There are, in fact, 6 methods, but the main ones are 2:

  • Classic Method or Champenoise Method
  • Martinotti or Charmat Method

Sparkling wines have different levels of pressure; the higher the pressure, the finer the bubbles will be.

We use the Charmat method to produce Garganega Brut. It originated in the first two decades of the 20th century. The base wine produced by the winery is allowed to ferment for the necessary amount of time and then transferred to a special steel tank called an autoclave, along with the amount of sugar determined by the winery and the necessary yeast. The wine undergoes a second fermentation, and the carbon dioxide produced pressurizes the autoclave; after that, the wine is filtered, blended, and bottled.

Wines produced using this method are fresh, and their secondary aromas are enhanced.
